Duo Midi

MIDIDuophonicLuaBlackbird

A duophonic midi instrument for the Workshop Computer, built on the Blackbird framework

The one project that I don’t have an image or video for! Duo MIDI was a project meant to demonstrate that you can release a full Computer Card for the Workshop Computer based on lua code you write in web-druid, leveraging the UF2 download capability I added there- that basically assembles a UF2 file with the Blackbird platform and then injects the lua code currently open in web-druid. This means users don’t need to worry about the Blackbird code at all- they can just write lua and then release a card. This is exactly what Benjamin Reily did with his Krell card which was amazing to see.

The card itself tries to deliver on a crazy idea I had very early thinking about possible computer cards- The Workshop System has two oscillators and two filters, so doing something duophonic with voice assignment and MIDI host would be cool, right? The answer is yes, it is really really fun. Not only that but using the Workshop System in this (admittedly extremely boring by experimental music standards) way is super gratifying and sounds great. Kudos to Tom Whitwell for making those analog bits sound so darn good.

One easter egg in Duo Midi is that the version of Blackbird that is built in is a prototype version that supports midi (in and out). I still need to actually release that. I had been holding out to make sure I could align the lua structure to the iii conventions but that is ready now. No more excuses!
